Let’s start this little historical piece out by letting you know that the Del Mar Skate Ranch was not the best built skatepark of it’s era. Got it?

  1. Dave forgot me.

  2. This is great! Loved going on road trips to Del Mar. I know us NorCal guys weren’t locals, but being that Del Mar Skateranch and Upland Pipeline were the only parks left by 1982 we all felt a strong connection to both parks. So glad to have ridden it, and with most of the locals listed above. Too many great memories. This is nostalgia of the best kind.
    Thanks Owen!

  3. how about Mark Jeffries aka, hermie as a famous lurker?

  4. So many stories of a trully epic time. The 80’s and north county San Diego. So many of us spent time living at Del Mar, skating, eating at the snack bar, sometimes for free. Some Of us worked for the man….Wayne Searle. I remember a few nights when Reese and I worked the Pro Shop we hung out, and…. after being closed for like an hour we turned the lights back on and skated, the I -5 freeway humming in the backround. Summer was always Epic, sneaking in to the Del Mar Fair, surfing in the morning, skating in the afternoon. What ever happend to Cory Federman, Chris Black, Bruno Herzog, Heidi Herzog, et al. Sleeping in the park was common……if we had of known then what this place would hold in skateboardings history would we have acted different? If u were lucky you could sleep inside in the loft between the skateshop and the RC shop. If you were unluckly you might roll your ankle playing Hi Ball….there were days and nights when no matter how awesome it was you would still feel very alone.
Even so…..I will never forget Del Mar. I met one of the best Girlfriends I ever had one night skating Del Mar.
Even if it was just sessioning the banks for a game of skate with Josh and Jason (Jesse) ….life was at finest.

  5. How come I am not listed in the last great ones column too? I worked there either in the snack bar and or pro shop during that time period and was there everyday basically from open to close. Owen remember when I broke my arm in the Key hole and you drove me to the emergency room. And I think it was Swifto that tried to find my teeth in the key hole when I knocked em out and broke my other arm a few months later. Oh by the way I found an old picture that I found in the attic at DMSR of the key hole under construction. The hole is dug out and some of the re-bar is in place. The back of the photo is stamped March 78. I also found 2 Swank Zines one has me in the centerfold doing a back smith on the parking blocks and a 10 foot Boneless zine. Found some other pics too. A really cool one of Grisham doing a one footed invert from around 84 or 85. a pic of me at around age 9 or 10 standing by the Surf and Turf sign near the entrance with mad rats on and a what looks like a strople board. some other cool pics too. I would love to post some of this stuff please let me know if you are interested.

  6. Nelly, Added you to the list. I’m sure Swift had a brain fart and just forgot to add you!

  7. I remember seeing Chris Miller skate there – guess he was more local to Upland though.
